A New Way Into an Old Conversation
My Dearest Children by Danna Horwood offers a powerful shift in how we engage with history, trauma, and identity. At a time when Holocaust education is widespread yet antisemitism and division persist, this memoir asks a deeper question: What are we still missing?
Written as a series of letters to her children, the book explores how trauma, resilience, fear, and values are passed across five generations, and how those patterns continue to shape the way we think, react, and relate to others today.
Rather than focusing only on historical events, My Dearest Children centers the emotional inheritance behind them, offering readers a way to understand not just what happened, but the lasting legacy that continues.
Media Angle
This is not just a memoir.
It’s part of a broader conversation about:
-
Why mainstream approaches to Holocaust, antisemitism and citizenship education alone do not prevent hatred
-
How intergenerational trauma influences responses to current events
-
How personal storytelling can provide healing and help to shift understanding
Danna’s work is especially relevant in the context of rising global tensions and renewed conversations around identity, belonging, and historical responsibility.
