On November 9th 2025, we gathered at McMaster University to mark the 87th anniversary of Kristallnacht in partnership with Hamilton Jewish Federation and Hillel McMaster.
The evening began with opening remarks from Federation's CEO Gustavo Rymberg, who spoke about the continued relevance of Kristallnacht today and the importance of standing together as a community in the face of rising antisemitism.
Historian Pamela Swett provided historical context, offering insight into the events of 1938 and helping frame the evening’s featured presentation: the Canadian avant-premiere of Among Neighbours, a Polish film that explores themes of memory, moral responsibility, and the complexities of human behaviour during times of persecution.
A particularly meaningful part of the evening came from students at Hillel McMaster, who shared personal reflections on what Kristallnacht means for their generation. Their words highlighted the importance of Jewish identity, pride, and presence on campus today.
The program concluded with remarks from Maggie Norris, Margaret's Legacy's logistics coordinator, who spoke about resilience, continuity, and the strength of community in carrying these stories forward.
We are grateful to McMaster University for hosting this important commemoration and to the supporters who made the evening possible, including the Weisz Family Foundation, Rhoda Katz Holocaust Education Endowment Fund, Paratus Investors Corporation, and the Azrieli Foundation.
Events like this serve as an important reminder that remembrance must be active. By coming together, across generations and institutions, we continue the work of education, reflection, and responsibility.
